OVERNIGHT # 21 CAVALIER OCEANFRONT RESORT / BIG SUR

Hi,  Big Sur is a rugged stretch of California's coast between Carmel and San Simeon. It is bordered to the east by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the west by the Pacific Ocean. The 2 lane road State Route 1 is winding turns, seaside cliffs and views of the coastline. The region has numerous state parks for hiking, camping and beachcombing.

We visited Sand Dollar State Beach. From the parking lot there is a foot path that leads to a long wooden stairway taking you to a wide sandy beach with large rocks in the surf at the south end. We never found the wooden stairway.  The picnic area is very nice and shaded. Across the street is  campground Plaskett Creek Campground.

Our daughter got us a hat with a photo patch of this bridge on it as a souvenir.
Bixby Canyon Bridge was completed in 1932 and is one of the highest bridges of its kind in the world. It is 260 feet above the bottom of a steep canyon carved by Bixby Creek.

Building this bridge without the use of heavy machinery is mind boggling. 45,000 individual sacks of cement had to be hauled up on a narrow one-way hairpin turn road in a steep and crumbling cliff area.  The bags of cement were transported via a system of platforms and slings suspended by cables 300 feet above the creek. Such beautiful architecture in a magnificent setting, makes this one of the most photographed bridge in California.

Our last stop in Big Sur was the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park near mile marker 47.2. It covers approximately 1006 acres of land. This park is on the western slope of Santa Lucia Mountains, the peaks tower high above the Bid Sur River Gorge, where the Big Sur River enter the park. You can walk along the banks of the river and among the redwoods, conifer, oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, alders and willows. This park has a large campground with many campsites located along the Big Sur River. The Big Sur Lodge has 61 guest rooms, cafe and grocery store. Wildlife is abundant in this park.
