OVERNIGHT # 29 FLAMING GORGE-UINTAS SCENIC BYWAY / 3RD NIGHT AT FRED HAYES S.P.

Hi, We took the Flaming Gorge -Uintas Scenic Byway out of Vernal Utah on US Hwy 191. The byway features 15 interpretive sites, which will be fun to do again when the snow is gone. These interpretive signs explain the evolution of the areas geology and wildlife.

Along this byway we came to Steinaker State Park. The Steinaker Reservoir stores runoff water from Ashley Creek to provide irrigation water to the Ashley Valley. The area is named for General Willian K. Ashley, famous for his leadership in the fur trade in the West in the 1820s and 1830s.
The campground online reservations begin in may. Online it says walk up reservation is available but this is what it looked like on Feb 8, 2023.
We had a nice view for our car picnic at this park.

The next state park that we came to was Red Fleet State Park. This park is home to numerous dinosaur tracks which are believed to be more than 200 million years  old. The track are preserved in Nugget sandstone. The tracks range from 3-17 inches. It would be nice to come back when the area isn't covered with snow and walk the 1.5 mile trail to see these tracks. From what we read, the best viewing times are early morning or late afternoon when the sun isn't directly overhead.
LAZY CAMPING MEAL: This is the way to cook bacon in a cabin with a microwave. No mess but it does require ice box or refrigerator. The bacon is divided into plastic bags, ready to put into the microwave. We just recently discovered this gem!
Have a good day and night,
