PLACE 26 Mesa Verde National Park

 Hi, Mesa Verde National Park was the first national park set aside to preserve the Ancestral Pueblo culture and prehistoric architecture. The park preserves an extraordinary record of the Pueblo people who made Mesa Verde their home for over 750 years, from A.D.550 to  A.D.1300. President Theodore Roosevelt established it June 29, 1906.

We did this portion of the Scenic and Historic Byway, Trail of the Ancients from Cortez east on Hwy 160 to and through the park.  The visitor center is near the park entrance Hwy 160. 

The drive has scenic overlooks. This was our first stop.


Many of the cliff dwellings cannot be toured until May 1st and then can only be toured with a ticket and ranger.  The tour tickets can be purchased on line at recreation.gov.

This is the one cliff dwelling that we saw which is the Spruce Tree.


We also saw some wild horses way back in the park, miles from any border of the park.

LAZY CAMPING: For any early riser after a rainy night camping, pull out a stadium seat that can easily go under a camp sleeping pad and sit on the table with a cup of camp coffee and watch for wildlife.

PLACE 3 MCNCA- McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area

Hi,   Today we went to the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area. (MCNCA). It is 123,4000 acre area west of Grand Junction. It was named after Scott McInnis and it is run by the BLM. There are 4 free campgrounds and are located south of I-70 exit 2. We had a picnic at this campsite.  Our dog joined us on this outing. He enjoyed our hike but could have done without the burs in his feet! The last place that we explored today was the High North Campground and this was on the north side of I-70, exit 2. This campground was up a steep one lane road with some small pull outs. The views from the campground were so beautiful. Lazy Camping: Make coffee by using a coffee bag and boiling water. PLACE 11 Vega State Park

  Hi, We decided to see Vega State Park this time of year. This is what we found. As you can see its very beautiful but we did not find a place to picnic! LOL! Vega State Park is 8000ft elevation. There is ice fishing, cross country skiing, and a lot of snowmobiles. Those visitors must register at the visitor center.  There are 5 cabins that are open and parking lots plowed all year.  One interesting amenity is that the park offers Landeez All Terrain wheelchairs that will go just about anywhere, for disabled visitors. Our dog had fun in the snow. We really enjoyed the beauty of the area. LAZY CAMPING: For winter camping wear long johns and at bedtime just remove outer layer and the long johns are your PJs. OVERNIGHT # 33 MESQUITE NV. / VIRGIN RIVER CANYON RECREATION AREA

Hi, Today we drove to the Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area which is located along Interstate 15 approximately 20 miles northeast of Mesquite, NV. It is accessed from the Cedar Pocket Exit ( mile post18). There are recreational opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, water play and more.  It is surrounded by two designated wilderness areas. The Paiute Wilderness east of Intestate 15, and Beaver Dam Mountains Wilderness to the west. The Sullivan Canyon Trail starts within the recreation area and heads into the heart of the Paiute Wilderness area. The campground and day-use areas also both have scenic trails leading to the Virgin River. This facility has a day use area and a campground. The campground amenities include drinking water, flushing toilets, picnic table some with shade shelters, fire pit / grill.  The camping fee is $8 per site or $4 with senior pass.  14 day limit.
