PLACE 35 Dennis Weaver Memorial Park

Hi, The Dennis Weaver Memorial Park is a park built by the Weaver family in memory of their beloved husband, father and grandfather.  It is on land they donated to Ridgeway. The entrance to the park is marked by a sign and an Eagle Monument which is a 2800 lb bronze sculpture sitting on a huge stack of rocks. People often stack stones in this area for prayers or tribute to a loved one. The location is 1.5 mile north of Ridgeway and west onto River Sage Rd.


Within the park are miles of hiking and biking trails. 




The park has many  acres of wildlife preserve along the Uncompaghre River.

Dennis Weaver was a Navy pilot, actor and environmentalist. His acting career included a role in Gunsmoke & McCloud. He also had a leading role in 40 movies. Some of the descriptions that we read about him said that he was great, gracious, and friendly.

Dennis married Gerry Stowell, the love of his life for 61 years. They raised 3 sons named Rick, Rob and Rusty.
Their thoughts about life were "Be happy with yourself, Be content with who you are , Express your love in thought, work and action."

This was a beautiful park to explore. We enjoyed the walk by the river. The picnic area at the park looks like a nice place to spend the day with family or friends.


LAZY CAMPING: Buy a screen tent with magnet door closures so its easy to get into when your hands are full. We used a screen tent over the picnic table for many years.  Recently the zippers broke and this is our new one and it has the magnet closure.

PLACE 3 MCNCA- McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area

Hi,   Today we went to the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area. (MCNCA). It is 123,4000 acre area west of Grand Junction. It was named after Scott McInnis and it is run by the BLM. There are 4 free campgrounds and are located south of I-70 exit 2. We had a picnic at this campsite.  Our dog joined us on this outing. He enjoyed our hike but could have done without the burs in his feet! The last place that we explored today was the High North Campground and this was on the north side of I-70, exit 2. This campground was up a steep one lane road with some small pull outs. The views from the campground were so beautiful. Lazy Camping: Make coffee by using a coffee bag and boiling water. PLACE 11 Vega State Park

  Hi, We decided to see Vega State Park this time of year. This is what we found. As you can see its very beautiful but we did not find a place to picnic! LOL! Vega State Park is 8000ft elevation. There is ice fishing, cross country skiing, and a lot of snowmobiles. Those visitors must register at the visitor center.  There are 5 cabins that are open and parking lots plowed all year.  One interesting amenity is that the park offers Landeez All Terrain wheelchairs that will go just about anywhere, for disabled visitors. Our dog had fun in the snow. We really enjoyed the beauty of the area. LAZY CAMPING: For winter camping wear long johns and at bedtime just remove outer layer and the long johns are your PJs. OVERNIGHT # 33 MESQUITE NV. / VIRGIN RIVER CANYON RECREATION AREA

Hi, Today we drove to the Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area which is located along Interstate 15 approximately 20 miles northeast of Mesquite, NV. It is accessed from the Cedar Pocket Exit ( mile post18). There are recreational opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, water play and more.  It is surrounded by two designated wilderness areas. The Paiute Wilderness east of Intestate 15, and Beaver Dam Mountains Wilderness to the west. The Sullivan Canyon Trail starts within the recreation area and heads into the heart of the Paiute Wilderness area. The campground and day-use areas also both have scenic trails leading to the Virgin River. This facility has a day use area and a campground. The campground amenities include drinking water, flushing toilets, picnic table some with shade shelters, fire pit / grill.  The camping fee is $8 per site or $4 with senior pass.  14 day limit.
