PLACE 37 BLM camping DS road and Miracle Rock Recreation Site

Hi, We were most happy with our exploration today. This is about the BLM lands at the end of DS Road. Dispersed camping is the term used for camping anywhere outside of a designated campground  and usually means no services such as trash removal, tables, fire pits etc.  Most dispersed camping seems to be way back poor quality dirt roads. This one had places to camp at the end of a paved road. The BLM land does extend on down some dirt roads also.  The views are pretty.

The wildflowers are starting to bloom in Colorado and this area had a lot of  flowers and budding bushes and trees. 

With dispersed camping it is important to leave no trace of use. If there are already signs that an area has been used for camping then its important to pick that spot. Here is a sight that was used by campers.  Glade Park site has many good suggestions for this type of camping. Go to gladepark.com then outdoor pursuits then camping and finally BLM Guidelines for Dispersed Camping. 

There are 245 million acres of public lands for outdoor adventures. The BLM lands are for camping, hiking, rock climbing, hunting, fishing, shooting and more activities.  The Miracle Rock is a picnic area with juniper shaded tables. It is managed by the BLM. There is a site that has all the information about the BLM lands at blm.gov

We are looking forward to camping and picnicking more often in the areas that we found on this outing.

PLACE 3 MCNCA- McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area

Hi,   Today we went to the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area. (MCNCA). It is 123,4000 acre area west of Grand Junction. It was named after Scott McInnis and it is run by the BLM. There are 4 free campgrounds and are located south of I-70 exit 2. We had a picnic at this campsite.  Our dog joined us on this outing. He enjoyed our hike but could have done without the burs in his feet! The last place that we explored today was the High North Campground and this was on the north side of I-70, exit 2. This campground was up a steep one lane road with some small pull outs. The views from the campground were so beautiful. Lazy Camping: Make coffee by using a coffee bag and boiling water. PLACE 1 Wild Horse Range

  Hi,  This is day 1 of our 50 places in 60 days. Since our 50th anniversary is coming up soon, we  decided to celebrate by visiting 50 places in Colorado that we haven't explored yet. We also want to share a lazy camping idea in each post.  We visited a wild horse range that is close to Grand Junction, Co. Bookcliffs Wildhorse Range is 1 of 3 ranges in U.S. set aside to protect wild horses. Directions: I-70, exit 45 and go north 1.5 mile. Bear right at the fork to enter the Coal Canyon trail head. There was major road construction so be ready for some detours. The road turns to dirt after about one mile and there are a few shallow wash outs to go through. We never saw any wild horses today but there were signs that they had been in this area. There is a map display and a vault toilet in the parking lot.  This area has other trails other than the Coal Canyon Trail. We enjoyed our time here. OVERNIGHT # 8 VEGA STATE PARK

  Hi, We camped at Vega State Park on October 18th 2022. This is a great time to camp at this state park because of the golden leaves. The scenery is beautiful morning, noon and night!  The campground was sparsely populated. We were in site 114.  Vega State Park is about 8000 feet elevation and just northeast of the Grand Mesa National Forest. It is open year round. In March it was snow covered this year. There are 109 campsites located in 4 campgrounds around the lake. Activities include fishing, hiking, bird watching. In the winter it is a good place to snowshoe, cross country ski and snowmobile. The 6 cabins are open year round. Reservations are made online at Reserveamerica.com. The Meadows Group Picnic Area is so beautiful and would be a great location for a wedding or family reunion.
