PLACE 46 Idaho Springs
Hi, Idaho Springs is located in northeast Clear Creek Canyon a few miles west of Denver.
The Colorado gold rush began in Idaho Springs and the Argo Gold Mine, Mill & Tunnel played a big part in this story in 1893. It processed over 100 million dollars of gold ore in its lifetime. The Colorado and Southern narrow gauge railroad ran in front of the Argo and provided easy transport to the United States Mint in Denver Colorado.
The downtown was designate a national Historic District in 1984. In the 1870s to 1900, the downtown was the center of activity and it still is today. One of our favorite places to eat pizza is Beau Jo's and the building that it is in was built in 1879. Tommyknockers Brewery is also located in a historic building in downtown built in 1892.
There is a good BBQ place and we discovered that you can eat outside by the river. Its called Smokin Yards. Its been awhile since we had it but it was great BBQ back then.
Our best discovery is the Charlie Taylor Water Wheel Trail that goes to the Bridal Veil Falls. Its a very short walk and such a great way to view the falls from Water Wheel Park. It starts at Herald A Anderson Park which is on 17th Ave. in Idaho Springs. Also the Heritage Museum at the Visitor Center in Idaho Springs is a good way to learn about the history and growth of this town.
LAZY CAMPING: Combine these two items in a camp pan and bring to a boil. Great easy bean dip. Serve with tortilla chips.
