OVERNIGHT #22 BEST WESTERN BOULDER DAM /LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA / VALLEY OF FIRE

Hi, Our over night was at Best Western at 704 Nevada Highway Boulder City, Nevada. This was in a convenient
location for visiting the Hoover Dam,  Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Valley of Fire. 1-800-780-7234.

The Hoover Dam is in the Black Canyon spanning the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada about
30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, NV.
Hoover Dam was built  during the Depression and still stands as a world-renowned structure. TheDam is a  National Historic Landmark and has been rated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one
of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.
There are several tour packages that one can purchase.


The Lake Mead National Recreation Area is America's first and largest National Recreation Area.
It is a year round play ground with striking landscapes and pretty blue waters on 1.5 million acres of
mountain, canyons, valleys, 2 lakes and 9 wilderness areas. As with most National Parks, there is an
entrance fee if you don't have a senior pass. Lakeshore Road (NV 166) is a scenic route to see part of 
Lake Mead.


From Lakeshore Road (NV 166), we turned on Northshore Dr. ( NV 167) to head to Valley of Fire entrance.
Valley of Fire State Park is at 29450 Valley of Fire Hwy, Overton NV and is a geologic wonderland covering
46.000 acres. The park derives its name from the sandstone formations which formed from shifting sand
dunes 150 million years ago. There are 2000 year old petroglyphs carved into massive red sandstone
formations in the Mohave Desert.
 

There is so many things to see and do in these locations that we may have to return here many times!

LAZY CAMPING/ ROOM MEAL:  We have always had a few favorites in fast food drive through restaurants and there was a Jack In The Box close to this hotel. We like being able to get breakfast sandwiches 24 hours a day.

PLACE 1 Wild Horse Range

  Hi,  This is day 1 of our 50 places in 60 days. Since our 50th anniversary is coming up soon, we  decided to celebrate by visiting 50 places in Colorado that we haven't explored yet. We also want to share a lazy camping idea in each post.  We visited a wild horse range that is close to Grand Junction, Co. Bookcliffs Wildhorse Range is 1 of 3 ranges in U.S. set aside to protect wild horses. Directions: I-70, exit 45 and go north 1.5 mile. Bear right at the fork to enter the Coal Canyon trail head. There was major road construction so be ready for some detours. The road turns to dirt after about one mile and there are a few shallow wash outs to go through. We never saw any wild horses today but there were signs that they had been in this area. There is a map display and a vault toilet in the parking lot.  This area has other trails other than the Coal Canyon Trail. We enjoyed our time here. OVERNIGHT # 8 VEGA STATE PARK

  Hi, We camped at Vega State Park on October 18th 2022. This is a great time to camp at this state park because of the golden leaves. The scenery is beautiful morning, noon and night!  The campground was sparsely populated. We were in site 114.  Vega State Park is about 8000 feet elevation and just northeast of the Grand Mesa National Forest. It is open year round. In March it was snow covered this year. There are 109 campsites located in 4 campgrounds around the lake. Activities include fishing, hiking, bird watching. In the winter it is a good place to snowshoe, cross country ski and snowmobile. The 6 cabins are open year round. Reservations are made online at Reserveamerica.com. The Meadows Group Picnic Area is so beautiful and would be a great location for a wedding or family reunion. OVERNIGHT #30 DINOSAUR INN & SUITES HOTEL / DINOSAUR NATIONAL MONUMENT &

  Hi, After 3 nights in a state park cabin without shower or running water, we booked a night at the Dinosaur Inn & Suites. This hotel is locally owned and operated and located in the heart of downtown Vernal Utah. They offer excellence in quality, comfort and hospitality since 1929. All rooms have WIFI, high speed internet, fridge, microwave, Keurig coffee maker, iron and Direct TV with HBO and Cinemax. All the comforts were very appreciated! Our travels were to the Dinosaur National Monument. Our first stop was at the Quarry Visitor Center which is in Jensen, Utah. They are open all year except some holidays. We watched a 12 minute park film and then with an information packet we went exploring. This park has amphibians, birds, fish, mammals & reptiles. We were able to watch and enjoy some mule deer.
